Case Overview
What began as a routine transport for 15 rescue animals turned into a frightening experience when the shelter’s van suffered a tire blowout while crossing the Skyway Bridge and crashed into a guardrail.
Thankfully, all passengers, human and animal, survived without major injuries. One small puppy, however, sustained a lateral humeral condylar fracture after his crate was crushed in the collision.
Surgical Insight and Expert Care
Dr. Nicole Mayne from Wildflower Veterinary Surgery promptly offered surgical assistance at the shelter. After radiographic evaluation confirmed the fracture, she performed an open reduction and internal fixation using LEICOM Headless Compression Screws.
The screw’s self-compressive design provided secure interfragmentary compression across the condylar fracture line while minimizing implant prominence, which was ideal for such a small patient. This stable fixation allowed for early functional recovery and reduced postoperative irritation around the elbow joint.
Recovery Outlook
Postoperative radiographs confirmed excellent alignment and stable fixation. The puppy is healing well and is expected to make a full recovery in just a few weeks, ready for adoption and a fresh start with a new family.
