Case Overview
In April 2025, a 3-year-old, 5.6 kg mixed breed dog suffered a severe injury after being struck by a bicycle. The patient presented with a complex proximal comminuted radius fracture and a mid-diaphysis ulnar fracture, classified as an open fracture Grade 1. Thanks to swift surgical intervention and advanced technology, the dog is now back to its energetic self.

A Surgical Insight
The complex, dual-bone injury required a sophisticated approach performed by Dr. Ditte Skytte.
- The severely comminuted radius fracture was stabilized using a 2.0 mm titanium LeiLOX plate, specifically chosen to manage the comminution in combination with a supportive repair of the ulna.
- The ulna fracture was addressed with our innovative 1.0 mm titanium LeiLOX plate, secured by 1.3 mm locking screws. This combination provided robust, yet minimally disruptive, fixation crucial for a small patient. The surgical site was thoroughly flushed, and the patient received Cefazolin both perioperatively and for three days post-op to manage the open wound.

Recovery Outlook
The patient's recovery was remarkably fast!
- Early Progress: The dog began bearing weight within the first two weeks. The owner honestly reported it was “simply not possible” to keep the energetic dog from jumping on and off furniture.
- Full Weightbearing: At the 6-week orthopedic control, the dog was fully weightbearing. It was taking the recommended 10-15 minute leash walks, but in addition to having unsupervised access to the garden.
- X-Ray Confirmation: The surgery sites were fully healed, with no discomfort upon palpation. X-rays showed advanced healing with significant callus formation and all implants intact.

A Testament to Modern Veterinary Innovation
This case is a powerful example of how the entire LeiLOX system, including the new 1.0 mm plate, provides the secure, tissue-friendly stability needed for complex fractures. It allows for highly specific and robust stabilization in small animal orthopedics, enabling a rapid and complete return to function, even in highly active patients. It is inspiring to see this technology fully restore the beloved family member's mobility and quality of life!
