Loki´s Story: Resolving Seizures through Cranial Reconstruction with LeiMESH

The Case

Loki, a 1.5-year-old German Pinscher weighing 16 kg, was referred to Tierklinik Altheim GmbH in Austria following a series of intermittent epileptiform seizures. These episodes began after an accident on 15 July 2025, causing significant concern for his owners and leading to a comprehensive neurological investigation.

Diagnosis

Advanced imaging via CBCT revealed a complex structural issue: an open fontanelle paired with an exostosis. This bony protrusion was pressing directly into the cranial cavity. It became clear that surgical intervention was necessary to remove the pressure on the brain and stabilize the skull to prevent further neurological decline.

The Procedure

The surgery was performed by Dr. Simon Hebenstreit and Dr. Walter Hebenstreit. The procedure involved opening the skull to carefully remove the protruding exostosis.

To complete the reconstruction, the surgical team had to close both the resulting surgical defect and the pre-existing open fontanelle. For this, they utilized LeiMESH by Rita Leibinger Medical. The LeiMESH system was selected for its ability to provide stable, permanent coverage while adapting perfectly to the patient's cranial anatomy.

Recovery and Results

Loki’s recovery has been remarkable. Since the surgery, his general behavior has returned to that of a healthy and energetic young dog. While he has had two minor, brief episodes, his owners describe him as a "completely different dog." The chronic symptoms that previously shadowed his life have vanished, and his quality of life has been fully restored.

Clinical Takeaway

Loki’s success highlights the importance of precise implant selection in veterinary neurosurgery. By combining surgical expertise with the flexibility of LeiMESH, the surgical team was able to resolve a complex skull defect and provide a long-term solution for a patient with a challenging neurological prognosis.
